21,000 Iraqis; 12 women, 366 juveniles, held in US jails in Iraq
Military and Security    7/11/2008 4:48:00 PM

BAGHDAD, July 11 (KUNA) -- The US army holds 20,945 Iraqis, including 12 women and 366 juveniles, in its jails in Iraq, an army source said here Friday.
Those Iraqi detainees are put under control of the US Force 134 of the Multinational Forces, the source, on anonymity, told the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).
The figure involves several members of Saddam Hussein's defunct Iraqi regime, over 4,000 fundamentalists and 2,500 elements of Al-Qaeda network in Iraq, the source added.
All those detainees are now being put under rehabilitation programs so that they may become good and effective elements in the society once they are freed, it said.
However, 9,000 detainees were released during the period from early 2008 to June 31st, the source noted.
The Iraqi Supreme Judiciary Council has recently put the figure at 20,000 detainees, including 240 Arabs. (end) mhg.mha.mt KUNA 111648 Jul 08NNNN
