Police identifies suspect in Bhutto assassination

ISLAMABAD, Jan 29 (KUNA) -- Police Tuesday claimed identifying a suspected suicide bomber who killed former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto in an election campaign in December in adjacent Rawalpindi city.
The suicide bomber, who blew himself up after another militant fired shots at Bhutto, has been identified as "Bilal" who comes from the Waziristan tribal region, along the Afghan border, news channels quoted police sources as saying.
The arrest has been made, said sources, after a lead provided by earlier arrested teenager suspect Aitzaz Shah.
Aitzaz Shah, 15, was arrested in the northwestern city of Dera Ismail Khan last week. The interior ministry confirmed that he has confessed as a member of the back-up group of suicide bombers who killed Bhutto. Another suspect, Sher Zaman, was also arrested on Aitzaz's tip-off.
Police sources said that a team has already been dispatched to the Waziristan region to interrogate Bilal's family, who has been shifted to Rawalpindi.
Benazir Bhutto was shot dead after addressing a campaign rally in December in Rawalpindi. A minute later, a suicide bomber blew himself up, killing more than 50 people and wounding dozens of others.
A team of Scotland Yard detectives is helping Pakistan investigate the assassination, but Bhutto's party and her widower, Asif Ali Zardari, have demanded a UN probe into the killing.(end) amn.wsa KUNA 291103 Jan 08NNNN
