WASHINGTON, Nov 28 (KUNA) -- US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on
Wednesday named James Jones, a retired Marine General and former NATO
commander, as the Administrations special envoy for Middle East security.
Rice, in a brief remark to reporters, said Jones task would be to follow
up on security issues between Israel and the Palestinians.
"General Jones is the person we need to take up this vital mission," she
said.
The announcement was made a day after Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert
and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas shook hand before ministerial
representatives from 44 countries at the Annapolis conference announcing the
launch of peace negotiations. (end)
