(With photos) KHARTOUM, Oct 30 (KUNA) -- Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa said Tuesday that up to USD 250 million were pledged by Arab countries, organizations and funds in support of humanitarian efforts in the troubled Sudanese district of Darfur.
Moussa, who was speaking at the end of a conference held in support of Darfur's humanitarian effort, said the amount comprised cash grants as well as well as contributions to development projects.
He added that the pledged aid would be monitored by the Arab League itself.
He urged the international community to do more to get the Darfur warring factions back on talking terms.
He expressed admiration of the Sudanese government stand in implementing a unilateral ceasefire in Darfur.
Participants in the conference had condemned the kidnapping of children from Darfur and neighboring Chad and called for prosecuting the culprits.
Meanwhile, Kuwait on Tuesday called for redoubling efforts aimed at inking a peace accord on Darfur.
Kuwaiti Ambassador Jassem Al-Mubaraki, who heads the Arab Homeland Authority and headed the Kuwaiti delegation to the Darfur conference, said the failure of the Sert talks on Darfur "should not get us down." He called for facing up to the propaganda campaign depicting the clashes in Darfur as taking place among Arab tribes on the one hand and African ones on the other.
He recalled that the Kuwaiti Cabinet had approved, on two occasions, aid to Darfur including one USD one million in 2004 and another for USD 10 million. But he said that the troubled situation in Darfur had impeded the implementation of the two cabinet resolutions. (end) aa.eh KUNA 301806 Oct 07NNNN
