GENEVA, Oct 5 (KUNA) -- At the conclusion of a meeting on the Global
Cybersecurity Agenda (GCA) the International Telecommunication Union (ITU)
Secretary-General Dr. Hamadoun Toure said Friday that he hopes by 2009 there
will be a real common framework to adopt globally and nationally to tackle
Cybersecurity.
He added that by May 2008 there will be a first report and recommendations
from the working groups on Cybersecurity which he will in turn present to the
ITU Council in September.
There is in existence a convention on Cybercrime which 21 countries have
ratified and 22 others have signed since 2001 when it came into existence.
The Geneva meeting was in the form of High Level Experts from the
governments of Argentina, Brazil, Cameroon, China, Estonia, Germany, India,
Indonesia , Italy, Japan, Malaysia , Morocco, Russian Federation, South
Africa, Switzerland, USA .
It was also attended by representatives from African Telecommunication
Union, Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Telecommunications (ApecTel), UMTS
Forum, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Council of Europe,
Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), United Nations Institute
for Training and Research (UNITAR), International Criminal Police Organization
(Interpol), European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA).
Senior Industry experts from Bitek International, CISCO, Intel Corporation,
Microsoft, and Verisign attended the meeting as did academic and research
institutions. (end)
