LONDON, Feb 13 (KUNA) -- The State of Kuwait and the United Kingdom enjoy
deep-rooted and time-honored relations on both political and public level, and
this should be invested in even further in order to help with long-term
development in both countries, a leading UK academician told KUNA.
Durham University Vice Chancellor Chris Higgins was speaking to KUNA as a
guest invited to take part in the February festivities marking the 50th
Anniversary of the Independence, the 20th Anniversary of the Independence, and
the 5th Anniversary of His Highness the Amir's Assumption of Power.
The academician praised the achievements of the state so far and its
fulfillment of its role in initiating and realizing development, compared to
other states in the Gulf region.
Higgins said both countries are keen on boosting relations and the UK
realizes the important role Kuwait plays in securing the stability of the
region.
He added the university's Institute for Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies
(IMEIS) looks into the culture, language and other aspects of life of the
region in order to help avoid conflict in the future and support economic
growth. Cooperation between Kuwait and the IMEIS in the area of Arabic
language courses in particular dates back 50 years, he said.
The academician noted that a large number of Kuwaiti students, male and
female, join the institute, and pointed out a plan for academic partnership
soon between Durham University and a number of universities in Kuwait.
Such cooperation, he remarked, would contribute to expanding the scope and
quality of education, as well as develop a unique educational infrastructure.
