MANAMA, Jan 5 (KUNA) -- The Arabian Gulf University and the Kuwait-based
Regional Organization for the Protection of the Marine Environment (ROPME)
signed here on Wednesday a memorandum of understanding on cooperation to work
out regular reports on the state of marine environment in the Arabian Gulf.
Under the document, the two sides will develop a regional strategy for
protecting marine environment in line with results of the scientific
researches they will jointly make.
The document, the first of its kind between the two sides, was signed by
AGU President Dr. Khaled Al-Awhali and ROPME's executive secretary Dr.
Abdulrahman Al-Awadhi.
Speaking to reporters after the signing ceremony, Dr. Al-Awhali said: "The
degenerating marine environment prompted us to scale up researches in order to
outline the growing risks."
"The exacerbating environment pollution, coupled with climate change pose
grave health hazards to the future generations," he pointed out.
On his part, Dr. Al-Awadhi hailed the agreement saying it will act as a
catalyst for research activities and the capacity building programs.
"The current state of environment in the Arabian Gulf region poses serious
threats to the economies and public health, which prompted us to join hands in
the fight against environment pollution," he added. (end)
