Islamic conf. on environment opens in Amman

AMMAN, Sept 27 (KUNA) -- Some 100 Muslim scholars from 40 countries, including Kuwait, gathered here Monday for a conference themed "Environment in Islam." The conference, being organized by the Royal Aal Al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought, was opened by Prince Ghazi Bin Mohammad, personal envoy of and advisor to Jordanian King Abdullah II.
In his inaugural address, Prince Ghazi said: "We, as Muslims, have to humanity and to descendants constructive contributions through conserving environment." "We have to hand over Earth to the future generation in a condition better than we found it in," he stressed.
Prince Ghazi cited some Holy Quran verses and speeches by Prophet Mohammad (Peace Be upon Him) that urge against sabotaging or polluting environment.
On his part, Director General of the Royal Aal Al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought Dr. Mnawar Al-Mehid warned against "the grave consequences" of infringements on environment safety.
"The degeneration of environment poses serious risks to human health as we see today," he said.
Meanwhile, Dr. Abdulnasser Abulbasl, rector of the institute-affiliated World Islamic Sciences and Education University, detailed on the achievements made by the university in the field of environment protection since it was launched three years ago.
The conferees are scheduled to debate the environment pollution through an Islamic approach in a bid to find solution to this global problem.
They aim to promote the public awareness about the profound insight of Islam into the way to protect environment and preserve the interests of the entire humanity.
Up to 38 scientific researches, focusing on the environment-related teachings in the Holy Quran and speeches of Prophet Mohammad (PBuH) are being discussed, The State of Kuwait is represented at the three-day gathering by Chairman of Center for Research and Studies on Kuwait (CRSK) Dr. Abdullah Youssof Al-Ghunaim, Director General of Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Science (KFAS) Dr. Ali Al-Shamlan and Director of KFAS's research division Dr. Mahmoud Youssof Abdulrahim.
