U.S. AGREES TO REOPEN EMBASSY IN BELGRADE SARAJEVO, OCT 13 (KUNA) -- THE UNITED STATES AGREED TO REOPEN IT EMBASSY IN BELGRADE IN A STEP TO SUPPORT THE NEW DEMOCRATICALLY-ELECTED GOVERNMENT IN YUGOSLAVIA, AN AMERICAN DEPLOMAT IN BELGRADE SAID ON FRIDAY.
IN A STATEMENT FOR KUNA, THE AMERICAN DEPLOMAT IN CHARGE OF THE YUGOSLAVIAN FILE WILLIAM MONTGOMERY SAID THAT CLINTON'S ENVOY JIM O'BRIEN INFORMED YUGOSLAV PRESIDENT VOJISLAV KOSTUNICA DURING MEETING HIM LAST NIGHT THAT WASHINGTON DECIDED TO LIFT SOME OF THE SANCTIONS IMPOSED ON YUGOSLAVIA AND IT WILL STUDY LIFTING THE REST.
MONTGOMERY STRESSED THAT THE UNITED STATES WANTS TO SEE DEEP AND EFFECTIVE CHANGES IN YUGOSLAVIA, NOTING THAT THESE POSITIVE CHANGES WILL INCREASE THE AMERICAN SUPPORT.
HE ADDED THAT THE FORMER YUGOSLAVIAN REGIME ISOLATED BELGRADE FROM THE WORLD FOR TEN YEARS IN WHICH SLOBODAN MILOSEVIC'S GOVERNMENT WAGED WARS AND SPARKED CONFLICTS THAT CREATED HORRIBLE DISASTERS IN THE REGION, HOPING THAT BELGRADE WOULD RESTORE ITS RELATIONS WITH ITS NEIGHBORS.
MONTGOMERY SAID THAT THE AMERICAN DELEGATION HEADED BY O'BRIEN ASKED THE NEW YUGOSLAVIAN GOVERNMENT TO STICK TO DEMOCRACY AND RESPECT HUMAN RIGHTS AND TO RESPECT ITS NEIGHBOR COUTRIES RIGHTS AND VISIONS. (END) YR.KN KUNA 131356 Oct 00NNNN
