8 killed, 10 injured in fire in S. India

NEW DELHI, May 9 (KUNA) -- Eight workers, including five women, were killed and 10 others injured following a blast inside a fireworks unit in Virudhunagar district of south Indian state of Tamil Nadu, Indian police said on Thursday.
The Press Trust of India said quoting police that eight people were killed and 10 others were injured following a fire in fireworks unit near Sengamalapatti in Sivakasi of Virudhunagar district.
The police said that seven rooms where the firecrackers were kept were completely destroyed in the incident.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin directed the authorities to provide medical care to the injured and expressed condolences over the incident.
Police and firemen rushed the injured to a nearby government hospital and an inquiry has been launched to investigate the cause of fire.
Indian President Droupadi Murmu also expressed her sorrow in the loss of lives and conveyed condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured. (end) atk.mt
