State Department official: US renews eagerness to resolve GCC crisis

WASHINGTON, Feb 15 (KUNA) -- A senior State Department official reiterated Wednesday the US eagerness to resolve the GCC crisis in a manner that would meet America's interests as well as those of involved states.
The matter should be finalized to preserve the GCC as a cooperative mechanism that has the ability to confront the so-called Islamic State (IS) and other challenges, the senior official, who preferred not to be named, said during a special briefing in Amman, Jordan, where Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is visiting.
The senior department official stressed that "we very much hope that a resolution can be achieved. We'll do all we can to help in that regard. Whether or not one is possible depends on the decisions taken by the leaders involved." Asked about the US hosting a GCC summit, the official said "we very much hope it is possible to have a constructive GCC summit." Secretary Tillerson was recently in Kuwait to participate in the meeting for international coalition against the so-called Islamic State (IS) as well as the Kuwait International Conference on Reconstruction of Iraq (KICRI).
Secretary Tillerson is expected to concluded his regional tomorrow with visits to Lebanon and Turkey. (end) si.gta
