Arab League chief shores up fight against "terrorist groups"

CAIRO, Nov 4 (KUNA) -- The Arab League's Secretary General Ahmed Abul-Gheit said that increased cooperation on the part of Arab nations was imperative to up the fight against "terrorist groups." The Arab league chief made the remarks in a speech during an emergency meeting of the regional bloc on the level of permanent representatives, presided over by Saudi Arabia as per Egypt's request.
Abul-Gheit said that the Arab League was in need of support to be better able to deal with the lingering threat of terrorism, calling on Arab justice and interior ministers to ratchet up teamwork in efforts to keep terrorism and crime at bay.
He stressed that unity and cooperation would further "tighten the noose on terrorist groups", saying that the bloc stands in support of Egypt as the Arab world's most populous nation fights an increasingly complex war against terrorism.
"This emergency meeting here today is a show of solidarity with Egypt in its fierce battle against terrorism," Abul-Gheit said.
The Arab League Secretary General also vociferously condemned a recent mosque attack in Egypt's restive Sinai Peninsula, in which scores of people were left dead or wounded.
Kuwait's delegation to the meeting was headed by its permanent representative to the Arab League Ahmad Al-Bakr. (end) mfm.nam
