Speakers at KUNA's "Journalism during armed conflicts" workshop
KUWAIT, Dec 4 (KUNA) -- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) organized a workshop on "Journalism during armed conflicts" in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)'s regional mission in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
In his speech during the workshop, KUNA Deputy Director General for Editorial Sector and Chief Editor, Saad Al-Ali said the workshop aims to educate journalists and get them acquainted with international humanitarian law to cover news in war zones.
Al-Ali said that the world is witnessing unconventional conflicts, and with the increase in disputes among countries, the media can play an important role in defusing tension, as well as reducing and containing conflicts.
For his part, Coordinator of ICRC's protection department Ralph Wehbe said that this cooperation also aims at educating journalists about most precise terms that should be used when covering any news related to armed conflicts.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chairman of Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS) Anwar Al-Hasawi said that the issue of protecting journalists working in conflict zones received international attention, stressing that civilian journalists on assignments in armed conflicts must be respected and protected from any form of attack.
The workshop was attended by a number of journalists from various local media bodies in both public and private sectors, and members from KRCS. (end)
