Head of Syrian opposition's HNC quits

AMMAN, Nov 20 (KUNA) -- Riyadh Hijab, head of the Syrian opposition's High Negotiations Committee (HNC), resigned on Monday.
The move came about two years after he had been chosen to chair the umbrella group that brings together the armed and political opposition to President Bashar Al-Assad.
"Despite the great difficulties we faced, we made our utmost efforts to represent the aspirations of the Syrian people in the process of both political and democratic transition based on the principles of the revolution and its reference," Hijab said in a statement received by Shaam News Network.
It added that this helped "us stand against the attempts to reduce the ceiling of the revolution, prolong the regime of Bashar Assad and to counter endeavors of some external forces aimed to share our country." Hijab resigned as he didn't receive an invitation to attend the Riyadh II conference due on Wednesday that aimed at expanding the participation in the HNC, according to the network. (end) tk.hm
