Spain hopes EU recognize Palestinian State in coming months

MADRID, Nov 20 (KUNA) -- Spanish Foreign Minister Alfonso Dastis Monday hoped the European Union (EU) act in the coming few months and recognize the Palestinian State.
Dastis, at a joint news conference with his Palestinian counterpart Riyadh Al-Malki following their meeting, voiced confidence that the EU would deal with the issue of recognizing the Palestinian State in the few coming months, and in a way that would contribute to the peace process.
Spain wants to do this role in coordination with the EU in order to improve probability of reaching an agreement between the Palestinians and Israelis, he said.
Dastis said Spain supported the Palestinian reconciliation and the two-state solution, while condemning Jewish settlements built on occupied Palestinian territories.
Al-Malki hoped Spain re-assess its position and realized that recognizing the Palestinian State would positively contribute to achieving peace and security in the region.
The meeting between Dastis and Al-Malki was held on sidelines of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' visit to Madrid. (pickup previous) hnd.bs
