VIENNA, Sept 20 (KUNA) -- The State of Kuwait has stressed the importance of implementing the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) safeguard mechanism to ensure the stability and security of the Middle East region.
Addressing the IAEA's 61st General Conference, Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) Director General Dr. Samira Al-Sayed Omar said that her country was still appalled by Israel's refusal to sign the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), affirming that this was against all efforts to rid the world of weapons of mass destruction.
The KISR official also showcased Kuwait's rejection of the North Korean nuclear program that threatens global peace and security.
She affirmed that Kuwait abided by the UN resolutions connected with Pyongyang's worrying nuclear program.
She stressed Kuwait's utter commitment to the IAEA's efforts in sustainable development in various countries, adding that her country will stand with the agency against all kinds of global threats.
Regarding Kuwait's cooperation with other countries, she revealed that Kuwait had contributed to a uranium enrichment bank in Kazakhstan as a part of the GCC nation's belief in the peaceful use of this type of energy resource.
On Iran, Al-Sayed Omar called on Tehran to continue its transparent dealings with the IAEA, affirming that it would benefit the security of the region.
Atomic energy is part of the whole alternative energy ensemble which should be sought by all nations, said the Kuwaiti official.
On IAEA's technical cooperation program, she said that the platform was to encourage countries to develop their own programs.
She also reflected her satisfaction with the level of cooperation between the IAEA's program and KISR.
In regards to Kuwait's own projects, the Kuwaiti official affirmed that there were 11 projects underway in 2017 and 2018, revealing that they are mostly connected with protecting the environment from radioactive pollutants, and with medical use of atomic energy. (end) amg.gta
