Iraq's PM demanded suspension of Kurdish referendum

BAGHDAD, Sept 18 (KUNA) -- The Iraqi Supreme Court rule to suspend Iraqi Kurdistan's referendum plan came in response to a request by Prime Minister Haidar Al-Abadi, the premiership press office said on Monday.
The supreme court approved Al-Abadi's demand to consider the breakaway of any region or province from Iraq as "unconstitutional," his office said in a statement. The court decision was announced in the presence of all the tribunal members and was taken according to article no. 51 of the Civil Procedure and code No. 83 of 1969, the court said in a statement.
Kurdistan's authorities refused all decisions taken by Iraqi government and Iraqi Parliament, in this respect. They have rejected international calls to cancel the referendum. (end) aah.nhq
