Six PKK gunmen killed in Turkish security operations

ANKARA, Aug 21 (KUNA) -- The Turkish security forces said Monday that six members of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) were killed in separate counterterrorism operations in east and southeast Turkey and north Iraq.
Three terrorists, who were preparing for an attack on Turkish military bases, were killed by a Turkish airstrike in Iraq's Zap border area, Turkey's Anadolu Agency (AA) reported, citing a statement by the Turkish General Staff.
Turkish jets also destroyed three weapon emplacements belonging to the terrorists, the statement noted.
Separately, one terrorist was killed in a drone strike targeting a group of terrorists in Kulp district of Turkey's southeastern Diyarbakir province.
Another operation in eastern Van province killed two terrorists, the local governor's office said.
The operation was launched by the gendarmerie forces upon intelligence that the terrorists were planning to carry out a bomb attack in the city center, according to a written statement. A bomb-laden vehicle was detonated in Gurpinar district with the terrorists inside it, it said.
The PKK, listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union, resumed its armed campaign against Turkey in July 2015; since then, it has been responsible for 1,200 deaths among Turkish security personnel and civilians. (end) rs.gb
