US, China urge N. Korea to stop "provocative" behavior

WASHINGTON, Aug 12 (KUNA) -- U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed that North Korea must stop its "provocative and escalatory behavior," the White House announced on Saturday.
The White House said in a statement that the leaders affirmed by phone that the new United Nations Security Council resolution regarding North Korea "was an important and necessary step toward achieving peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula." The Presidents also reiterated "their mutual commitment to denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula." The statement noted that Trump "looks forward to seeing President Xi in China later this year, a meeting that will be a very historic event." The relationship between the two Presidents is an extremely close one, and will hopefully lead to a peaceful resolution of the North Korea problem," the statement affirmed.
Meanwhile, the White House said in a separate statement that Trump spoke with Guam Governor Eddie Calvo, during which he reassured him and the Americans there that the U.S. forces "stand ready to ensure the safety and security of the people of Guam, along with the rest of America." On Friday, Trump told reporters that he feels the people in Guam "will be very safe." He warned that "if anything happens to Guam, there's going to be big, big trouble in North Korea." (end) si.mt
