P5+1 meeting fears US insistence on maintaining sanctions against Tehran

VIENNA, July 20 (KUNA) -- The upcoming meeting for the P5+1 in the Austrian capital Vienna next week will be held amid fears of a Trump Administration insistence on maintaining sanctions on Iran despite the latter's commitment to the agreement signed with the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) in May 2015.
Diplomatic sources, preferred not to be named, told KUNA the upcoming meeting will discuss the June report by Yukiya Amano, Director General of the IAEA, which revealed that Tehran was abiding by the agreement that minimized Iran's enrichment of uranium, the main fuel for nuclear weapons.
Chief Iranian Negotiator Abbas Araghchi did not hide his government's concerns over the US intentions, which seemed to still echo the recently held G20 summit.
Iran had held meetings with allies such as Russia to discuss the agenda of the upcoming meeting, said Araghchi.
US President Donald Trump and a number of Republican Senators are not big fans of the IAEA-Iran deal.
In a strange twist, US Foreign Secretary Rex Tillerson said that Iran was still abiding by the tenets of the agreement, adding that this fact was not threatening to American interests.
However, he maintained that the US was still skeptic about Iran's role in supporting terror groups. (end) amg.gta
