US VP discusses regional issues with Guatemalan, Honduran leaders

WASHINGTON, June 15 (KUNA) -- Vice President Mike Pence met separately on Thursday with Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales and Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez at the inaugural Conference on Prosperity and Security in Central America in Florida.
With Morales, Pence recognized Guatemala for its "strong commitment to the Alliance for Prosperity, and steadfast support in the fight against illegal drug trafficking," said a White House statement.
He also emphasized the importance of "redoubling the fight against corruption and impunity." They also discussed the crisis in Venezuela and expressed concern for its people.
With Hernandez, Pence highlighted the President's "leadership in addressing security and governance challenges, and offered the strong partnership of the United States to maintain this commitment," a separate statement said.
"While acknowledging that much remains to be done, the Vice President recognized Honduras for its progress in combating corruption and enhancing border security," it added.
The leaders also expressed concern over the situation in Venezuela and reiterated their commitment to strengthening their bilateral relationship. (end) ak.gb
