Egypt informs UNSC about airstrikes on Eastern Libya

CAIRO, May 27 (KUNA) -- Egyptian Foreign Ministry announced Saturday that Egypt has formally apprised the UN Security Council of the airstrikes carried out by Egyptian fighters against militant camps in eastern Libya.
In a press statement, the ministry said that Egypt's diplomatic mission to the United Nations has submitted a formal message in this regard to the UN Security Council President.
In the message, Egypt stated that the air strikes targeted sites of terrorist groups in accordance with article 51 of the UN charter relative to the countries' legitimate self-defense right as well as to the UN anti-terror resolutions, the ministry added.
Earlier, the Egyptian Ministry of Defense announced that Egypt aircraft has carried out intensive air raids on terrorist sites in Libya.
It said that the airstrikes hit and destroyed premises and training camps of terrorists who plotted and participated in the tragic attack on Egyptian Copts in Minya Governorate, which left 29 people dead, including children and women, and scores others injured.
The airstrikes came after President Abdelfatah Al-Sisi's declaration that Egypt would not hesitate to attack terrorist sites inside or outside the country in retaliation of the attack on Egyptian Christians in Minya.
The so-called Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the deadly attack. (end) rg.ibi
