KUWAIT, March 29 (KUNA) - A popular campaign launched Wednesday by the Kuwait's Direct Aid Society has managed to collect donations estimated at KD 2.5 million (roughly USD 8.2 million) for fighting famine in Somalia.
In statements to KUNA, the Society's General Director Dr. Abdullah Abdulrahman Al-Sumait said the collected money would be spent on a number of projects to save the lives of Somalia people who are suffering from severe drought and famine.
He added that the Society would start the implementation of the projects as of next week.
He thanked the generous donors as well as the Kuwaiti government for facilitating the launching of the popular campaign for aiding the Somali people.
Earlier, the Direct Aid Society launched the relief aid campaign for Somalia, through its local branches and electronic media sites, in order to combat famine that threatens the lives of Somali people.
The campaign was aiming at collecting KD 500,000 (around USD 1.65 million) for digging big water wells at Somali villages to meet their needs for at least 10 years.
The first stage of this campaign collected KD 300,000 (around USD 900,000) to deliver 15,000 food baskets for about 90,000 Somalis.
The second stage gathered KD 200,000 (around USD 660,000) to build eight health centers. (end)
