ROME, March 25 (KUNA) -- Leaders of European Union member states pledged at conclusion of their summit in the Italian capital on Saturday to press ahead with integration among the continent's countries.
Rome Communique, inked by leaders of the 27 member countries, re-affirmed the collective resolve to keep the EU standing out amid a fast-changing world, with emphasis on unity and solidarity among them.
They have adopted the theme, "safe Europe," as a tile of their future scheme which envisages firm action against terrorism and organized crime.
Moreover, they have vowed to keep Europe enjoying "sustainable prosperity," boost development, create jobs, cement the unified market, the euro stability, bolster competitiveness, innovation and enterprise.
Furthermore, they have promised in the Rome summit final statement to tackle social marginalization, poverty, aiding the youth attain work and education, maintain cultural diversification among the nations in the continent.
They have affirmed the approach to adopt openness with the South, the East, the Middle East and Africa, expressed readiness to develop military integrated industries, work closely with the Nato and other nations within the UN framework.
The leaders of 27 European Union (EU) countries held the summit, without participation of Britain, which has embraced Brexit as a process to quit the union.
They have convened to celebrate 60 years since the Treaty of Rome was signed, amid heightened security and conflicting ideologies.
The EU leaders signed the new declaration which underscored commitment to common institutions and values, to honor the historic 1957 treaty that paved the way for the EU's inception.
Earlier in a speech kicking off the event, Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni chronicled the odyssey of the EU, saying that Europe has morphed into a land of social rights and economic powerhouse after enduring two world wars. (pickup previous) mn.rk
