Human rights should be adhered to during conflicts, crises - official

DOHA, Feb 20 (KUNA) -- Human rights should be adhered to during conflicts and crises, said Dr. Mohammad Koman, Secretary General of the Arab Interior Ministers' Council on Monday.
His remarks came during the opening session of the International Conference on "Human Rights Approach to Conflict Situations in the Arab Region," which was inaugurated earlier today.
Terrorism and security-related crises should be faced and dealt with within the framework of respecting human rights; a concept that the Council embraces, noted Koman, pointing out significance of this conference in highlighting human rights' violations, especially in tension spots throughout the Arab area, where such breaches prevail.
Many Arab countries are currently plagued with civil wars and armed conflicts, as foreign fighters flock from everywhere, turning these countries into hubs for regional and international interferences, as well as turning peoples of these countries into victims due to carnage, displacement and suffering, Koman said.
He added that even in conflict-free countries, terrorist organizations managed to preoccupy security bodies with smuggling, drug trafficking and illegal immigration.
The conference is organized by the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) and Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), in cooperation with the General Secretariat of the Council of Arab Interior Ministers and the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions.
It is attended by ministers, representatives of governments, regional, international inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations concerned with human rights, conflict resolution and peacekeeping. (pickup previous) nnd.hb
