KUWAIT, Dec 5 (KUNA) -- State of Kuwait has always been active in voluntary action, and its people are committed to principles of solidarity and love of others, Undersecretary of Ministry of State for Youth said Monday.
Sheikha Al-Zain Al-Sabah, in a speech at a ceremony marking the International Volunteer Day (IVD) held at the Amricani Cultural Center, said the number of Kuwaiti volunteers was on the rise because of their love to help others with the objective of improving well-being of other communities.
The Kuwaiti people are either helping the others by their own or through non-governmental organizations (NGOs), she noted.
Sheikha Al-Zain said Kuwait witnessed on December 5, 1934 - which coincided with IVD - heavy rains that destroyed 500 houses and displaced around 18,000 people who were forced to stay in schools, mosques and government buildings.
In that year, she added, the Kuwaiti people volunteered to help the bereaved families by hosting many of them, and later help in rebuilding the houses.
She said the Ministry of State for Youth has a strategy aimed at promoting the culture of volunteering among the youth.
