IPU welcomes holding women parliamentarians' summit

GENEVA, Oct 25 (KUNA) -- The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) on Tuesday welcomed a call by the UAE Federal National Council hold an international summit for parliaments' chairowmen, forecast in the UAE capital Abu Dhabi on December 12-13.
Dr. Saber Chowdhury, the IPU chairman, expressed hope at a news conference the planned conference would help in boosting economic prosperity, gender equality, sustainable environmental protection, applying sciences and technology.
He also hoped that the meeting, to be held for the first time at this level in the Middle East and the Arab region, would recommend action for safeguarding global peace and securing, enhancing tolerance.
"United for making the future" is the theme of the women parliamentarians' summit, co-organized by the IPU and the UAE legislative council.
Moreover, he hoped that it would pave the way for bolstering empowerment of the women, namely the legislators, and women partnerships in the Middle East and the Arab world.
IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong said the Abu Dhabi summit would be a strong message to peoples of the region regarding women empowerment.
Dr. Amal Al-Qubaisi, Chairperson of the UAE council, said the summit would group 50 female chiefs of parliaments.
The summit agenda tackles, in part, social impact of terrorism and dealing with its causes as well as cyber hacking. It also addresses "green-house" emissions, water scaracity, overpopulation and impact of modern technology on social bonds. (end) ta.rk
