US welcomes cessation of hostilities in Yemen

WASHINGTON, Oct 18 (KUNA) -- The US welcomed Tuesday's 72 hour Cessation of Hostilities agreement by Yemeni parties and the Saudi-led coalition.
"We ask the parties to take all steps necessary to advance the implementation of this cessation, call on them to sustain it, and strongly encourage its unconditional renewal," said Secretary of State John Kerry in a statement.
The cessation which is scheduled to take effect Wednesday requires all parties to implement a halt to all military activities and help facilitate the delivery of humanitarian assistance across the country.
"Peaceful resolution of this conflict requires compromises and commitments by everyone," Kerry affirmed.
The US "is ready to provide assistance and will continue to work with all parties to conclude a negotiated settlement that will bring a permanent and lasting end to the conflict," he added. (end) ak.bs
