Security operations kill 56 insurgents in E. Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD, Oct 4 (KUNA) -- At least 56 fighters belonging to so-called Islamic State (IS) have been killed in ground offensives and airstrikes in Afghanistan's eastern Nangarhar province, said official on Tuesday.
The provincial police spokesman, Hazrat Hussain Mashriqiwa told media that the joint operations were conducted by national and international forces killing at least 56 fighters belonging to IS in Achin district of Nangarhar.
He further said that the weapons and ammunitions belonging to insurgents were also destroyed during the operations in Pikhe-Khwar area of Achin. "Security forces and civilians were not harmed during the operations aimed at purging the restive district of Daesh militants", the police spokesman added.
The security operations came at a time when Afghan security forces have paced up their offensives against the local insurgents with support of foreign forces to maintain law and order in the remote areas.
Earlier last week, at least 13 people including civilians were killed and 14 others wounded in a United States led drone strike that targeted insurgents belonging to so-called Islamic State in Shadal Bazaar area of Achin district in Nangarhar. (end) sbk.tg
