US Senate votes to override Obama veto of JASTA

WASHINGTON, Sept 28 (KUNA) -- The US Senate on Wednesday voted 97-1 to override President Barack Obama's veto of the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act (JASTA) bill that would allow families of those killed in any terrorist attack on US soil to sue any country that had an alleged role in the terrorist plot.
The US House was expected to vote on the measure later in the day. If the House also musters the two-thirds votes necessary to override the veto, it would be the first such veto override of the Obama presidency.
Last Friday, Obama vetoed the JASTA, saying it would damage US interests with key allies and harm its own global sovereign immunity. Several Arab nations, mainly from the Gulf, had voiced their disapproval of the Congress bill passed two weeks ago. (end) rm.hb
