KUWAIT, Sept 26 (KUNA) -- The cabinet deplored Monday recent air strikes on humanitarian relief and aid convoys in Syria as a crime that has claimed the lives of a number of innocents.
The cabinet's condemnation came during its routine weekly meeting held at Seif Palace under chairmanship of Acting Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah.
It denounced continuing air strikes and military escalation against Syrian civilians in the Syrian city of Aleppo, which have left a number of civilians dead, Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah said in a statement following the meeting.
The cabinet, therefore, urged the international community to put an end to the humanitarian tragedy and brutal crimes inflicting on the Syrian people, so that Syria can restore its security and stability and stop ongoing bloodshed, he said.
Meanwhile, the ministers lauded Saudi security agencies' recent efforts to abort a criminal plan to launch terrorist operations targeting the security of the kingdom and the region.
They called on the international community to exert concerted efforts to fight all forms of terrorism, reiterating Kuwait's support to all efforts in this regard.
Furthermore, they offered sincere condolence to the Egyptian government and people over the victims of a recent boat sinking near the port city of Rosetta.
At the onset of the meeting, the Cabinet conveyed its heartiest greetings to the Kuwaiti leadership and the people of the nation on the occasion of the Islamic New Year, wishing Islamic nations continued prosperity and peace.
Moreover, the Cabinet looked over letters exchanged between His Highness the Amir and French President Francois Hollande, which tackled bilateral ties and ways to improve them, in addition to issues of mutual concern.
Meanwhile, the Cabinet also reviewed the speech by His Highness the Amir at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York, which underscored the need of further humanitarian and philanthropic work across the globe, as well as Kuwait's firm commitment to its humanitarian efforts.
Furthermore, Acting Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah spoke of the speech His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah gave during the 71st session of the UN General Assembly, on behalf of His Highness the Amir.
In the speech, His Highness the Prime Minister asserted Kuwait's support of political solutions to the conflicts in Yemen and Syria, in line with international laws and regulations. He also added that the fight against terrorism requires collective efforts, as no nation can exterminate this scourge on its own.
Speaking on Kuwait's candidacy to the UN Security Council (UNSC), he noted that Kuwait fully adheres to UN goals and plans, adding that the country will seek to put an end to rampant international conflicts, while promoting peace and security.
Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled also informed the Cabinet of the results of the 140th session of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Ministerial meeting, in addition to meetings held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Mohammad Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah spoke of British Secretary of State for Defense Michael Fallon's recent visit to the country, where he discussed with the Kuwaiti leadership bilateral ties and issues of mutual concern on regional and international levels.
The cabinet then listened to a briefing from Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah on the outcomes of his participation in the 17th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) conference in Venezuela on behalf of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.
Addressing the conference, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah had reiterated Kuwait's abidance by the NAM's main goals and principles, and its keenness on providing development aid to developing and least developed countries.
He had also hoped that Yemeni rivals could reach peace in their country soon so that it could restore its security and stability, reaffirming support to Iraq's efforts to fight terrorism and the so-called Islamic State (IS). (end) nam.mt
