Airstrike in Ar-Raqqah may have left civilian casualties -- US

WASHINGTON, Aug 24 (KUNA) -- A strike yesterday against a weapons facility of the so-called Islamic State near Ar-Raqqah, Syria, may have resulted in civilian casualties, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said Wednesday.
"Reports indicate that what appeared to be a non-military vehicle drove into the target area after the weapon was released from the aircraft. The vehicle's occupants may have perished as a result of the strike," a CENTCOM statement said.
The internal assessment of possible civilian casualties has been deemed "credible" and will be reviewed at the next joint task force level in which officials will decide if an investigation is needed, it noted. (end) ak.gb
