Defense Sec: Britain will not turn its back on int'l allies

LONDON, June 24 (KUNA) -- British Defense Secretary Michael Fallon said on Friday that he would soon hold discussions with his European counterparts to allay their concerns that "even when not in the EU, Britain would not turn its back on its international allies." The British government will remain firm on its commitments as a NATO member and part of the international coalition against the so-called Islamic State, a press statement by Fallon said.
Moreover, he described the status quo in the country as "abnormal", adding that the results of the referendum exposed "a polarized nation evenly split between supporters and opponents of Brexit." Speaking on the resignation of Prime Minister David Cameron in October, Fallon highlighted the need to elect a competent leader capable of restoring stability and reviving the economy.
Meanwhile, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Phillip Hammond underscored that the government should spare no effort to stabilize the stock exchange and ensure a seamless departure from the European Union (EU).
He also pointed out that the results of Britain's historic referendum has significantly altered Britain's relationship with the EU, noting that the departure process would take at least two years. Hammond also added that the economy is bound to face some hurdles as a result of the EU exit, saying that the government will do its best to ensure a robust and resilient economy. (end) kd.nam
