American IS member lies to FBI, gets four-year jail time

WASHINGTON, May 25 (KUNA) -- An Iraqi-born US citizen has been handed a four-year prison sentence for making false statements to the FBI about travelling to Syria to join the so-called Islamic State group.
Bilal Abood, 38, was given the sentence by a Texas court on Wednesday after an investigation and prosecution conducted by the FBI, read a statement by the US Department of Justice.
"We remain more committed than ever to aggressively fighting all terrorism-related acts in north Texas," said US Attorney John Parker of the Northern District of Texas.
FBI official in charge of the investigation, Thomas Class said that Abood "lied to the FBI about the true purpose of his travel to Syria and his allegiance to IS, and now he will face the consequences." Abood has been in federal custody since his May 2015 arrest by the FBI. He pleaded guilty in October 2015 to a one-count superseding indictment.
He was arrested upon his return to the US after an FBI investigation revealed he had travelled to Syria to join IS after his claims that his travel was to visit family. (end) sd.gb
