NATO ready to help new Libyan gov't - Stoltenberg

BRUSSELS, May 4 (KUNA) -- NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg underlined Wednesday that the 28-member Alliance stands ready to help and assist the new Libyan government.
"I spoke with the new Prime Minister just a couple of weeks ago. And we have a very clear mandate from our Heads of State and Government that NATO should be ready to help the new government," he told a news conference after a meeting with NATO's new Supreme Allied Commander Europe General Curtis Scaparrotti.
"So we are now in the process of transforming Active Endeavour (NATO) operation into a broader security mission which can deal with counter-terrorism, which can help dealing with migrant crisis, and we are in the process of discussing both with the new Libyan government and the European Union how NATO can help contribute in the best possible way," he said.
Scaparrotti took over command of NATO's Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe from General Philip Breedlove during a handover ceremony in the city of Mons, Belgium, on Wednesday. (end) nk.ibi
