US, Britain, Norway welcome S. Sudan unity gov't formation

WASHINGTON, April 29 (KUNA) -- The members of the Troika, including the US, Britain, and Norway, welcomed the long-awaited formation of South Sudan's transitional government of national unity on Friday.
In a joint statement they also welcomed the statements of President Salva Kiir and First Vice President Riek Machar, three days ago, calling for cooperation, reconciliation, and peaceful coexistence.
"We call on South Sudan's leaders to continue this spirit of cooperation and to start the difficult task of rebuilding their country," they added.
Despite the development, the statement regarded was a "step forward", it underlined that there was "no time for celebration" as the prior conflict has led to the death of thousands, widespread atrocities being committed and the displacement of millions.
"The fighting must stop, decisive action must be taken to tackle the economic crisis and there must be full cooperation with the UN and humanitarian agencies to ensure aid reaches those in need - formal and informal impediments must be removed," they said.
The Troika went on to pledge long term support of the transitional government "if it shows it is serious about working for the good of the country and implementing the peace agreement in full." The statement also highlighted that it expects the transitional government to "honor its commitments," including fully meeting obligations for women's participation in the council of ministers.
South Sudan President Salva Kiir earlier reinstated Vice President Riek Machar, whose sacking in 2013 led to a wide-scale conflict that claimed the lives of thousands. Together they have jointly formed a unity cabinet. (end) sd.ibi
