ANKARA, April 9 (KUNA) -- Five migrants; four women and one child, drowned when a boat carrying illegal migrants capsized off Greece's Samos Island close to Turkey's coast, the Greek Coast Guard said on Saturday.
Five other migrants aboard the same boat were rescued, the guard said in a press statement, adding that helped by a helicopter, coast guard vessels continued searching for more survivors.
The incident took place a few days after a Turkish-EU deal aiming to halt mass migration to Europe became effective.
Although flows of illegal migrants have slowed, migrants continue to reach Greek islands, as Greek authorities said 149 migrants had reached their islands in the last 24 hours. (end)
