NATO welcomes new commander of mission in Afghanistan

BRUSSELS, March 2 (KUNA) -- NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed Wednesday the appointment of General John Nicholson as the news commander of NATO's Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan.
"As commander of the Resolute Support mission, General Nicholson will lead NATO's effort to train, advise and assist the Afghan security forces and institutions, and help them further improve their effectiveness and sustainability," he said in a statement.
Nicholson has previously served in multiple roles in Afghanistan, including as Deputy Chief of Staff of Operations for the NATO mission in Afghanistan, International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) which ended in 2014.
He replaces General John Campbell who was the last Commander of ISAF, and the first Commander of the Resolute Support mission.
A new, smaller non-combat mission "Resolute Support" was launched in Afghanistan on January first, 2015. (end) nk.gta
