CAIRO, Feb 19 (KUNA) -- Secretary-General of the Arab League Dr. Nabil Al-Araby announced that the Kingdom of Morocco apologized for inability to host the coming ordinary Arab Summit, slated for April 6-7.
Al-Araby said in a press release on Friday that he has received a letter from Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Salaheddine Mezouar notifying him of the official apology.
The decision of Morocco to relinquish its right to host the summit was made at the behest of King Mohammad VI, the League chief said, citing Mezouar's letter and an earlier statement by the Moroccan Ministry.
The current challenges facing the Arab world and the recent consultations with sisterly Arab countries show that the summit will be unable to reach tangible results, thus becoming a mere ceremonial event, the statement of the Ministry noted.
Nevertheless, Morocco remains committed to serving the fair issues of the Arab world and reducing the political and sectarian tensions which fuel extremism, it added. (end) mfm.gb
