UNHCR urges int'l community for more funding to provide services for Syrians

GENEVA, Feb 9 (KUNA) -- UN refugees agency (UNHCR) urged the international community Tuesday to increase funding in order to continue provision of services for more than 2.5 million Syrians inside the the conflict-ridden country.
UNHCR, in a statement, also urged the Turkish authorities to open the borders for the Syrian people who escaped from the bombings in northern Syria.
It thanked Turkey and its people for hosting hundreds of thousands of Syrians over the past five years.
UNHCR said it was ready to help the Turkish authorities manage the reception of the new Syrian refugees.
The Syrian conflict broke out in March 2011, and has so far killed more than 250,000 people and injured many others. The crisis also displaced more than 12 million people who are either internally displaced or living as refugees in neighboring countries or Europe. (end) ta.bs
