LONDON, Feb 4 (KUNA) -- London's Syria Donors Conference has raised more than USD 10 billion, the largest amount of funds ever collected in one day in response to Syria's humanitarian crisis, UK Prime Minister David Cameron announced Thursday.
"Today has been and is a day of hope, a day about saving lives, a day about building futures, a day about giving people the chance of a future, the chance of a life. We have secured approaching USD six billion for 2016 alone, and a further USD five billion over the longer term to 2020," he told the conference.
He added "it means millions of people will now receive life-saving food, medical care and shelter in Syria and beyond." In addition, refugees in neighboring countries will get larger access to education and employment, he said.
The one-day conference, co-hosted by the UK, Kuwait, Norway, Germany and the UN, started earlier today to raise new significant funding to meet immediate and long-term needs for the people affected by the Syrian crisis and refugee-hosting countries.
The UN set its funding requirements for the 2016 Syria response at USD 7.7 billion. (end) nfm
