Turkish troops repel IS attack northwestern Iraq

ISTANBUL, Jan 8 (KUNA) -- Turkish troops repelled Friday an attack by Islamic State (IS) fighters on a military camp located in Nineveh, northwest of Iraqi capital Baghdad, said a statement.
The Turkish central command said that 17 IS members were killed during the attack at the Bashiqa camp used by Turkish forces to train Iraq armed groups fighting against the so-called Islamic State.
The statement indicated that no Turkish soldiers were killed during the incident.
Earlier this month, the Turkish Army sent 150 soldiers to the camp to protect it against possible IS attacks.
The presence of Turkish troops in northern Iraq had resulted in diplomatic tension between Baghdad and Ankara. (end) ta.gta
