Two Iraqi refugees separately arrested in US

WASHINGTON, Jan 8 (KUNA) -- Two men who were refugees to the United States were separately arrested and charged with providing support to the militant group, the so-called Islamic State (IS), and making false statements in terrorism investigation, the US Department of Justice said.
Aws Mohammed Al-Jayab, 23, who came to the US as an Iraqi refugee in October 2012 and a resident of Sacramento, California "allegedly traveled overseas to fight alongside terrorist organizations and lied to U.S. authorities about his activities," said the statement, released late on Thursday.
According to the allegations in the complaint, Al-Jayab traveled to Syria for two months and allegedly reported on social media that he was fighting with various terrorist organizations before returning to the US.
Nevertheless; "while he represented a potential safety threat, there is no indication that he planned any acts of terrorism in this country," said US attorney of Eastern District of California Benjamin Wagner in the statement.
Separately, Omar Al Hardan, a 24-year-old Iraqi refugee who entered the US in 2009, and a resident of Houston, Texas, has been charged in a three-count indictment alleging that he attempted to provide material support to the IS.
The indictment alleges that Al Hardan attempted to provide material support and resources, including training, expert advice and assistance, and personnel - specifically himself - to a foreign terrorist organization.
The statement said "he also knowingly responded, certified and swore untruthfully on his formal application when applying to become a naturalized U.S. citizen.
He represented that he was not associated with a terrorist organization "when, in fact, he associated with members and sympathizers of ISIL throughout 2014," according to the charges. (end) yt.rk
