US senators in Iraq's Kurdistan for talks on post-ISIL scenarios

IRBIL, Dec 1 (KUNA) -- Republican senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham met with Prime Minister of Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Nechervan Barzani and former premier Barham Salih to discuss needs of northern Iraqi region in combat against terror.
During the Monday night meeting with Barzani, McCain, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, reaffirmed his country's commitment supporting the Peshmerga forces in the against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), according to a statement by the KRG.
In their earlier meeting with Salih, the US senators discussed the recent victories made by the Peshmerga forces in all fronts against ISIL.
The two sides stressed the importance of providing the necessary weaponry to the Peshmerga forces in order to enable them to rout the ISIL militants and build on the recent success for the post-ISIL situation in the region.
They also explored ways for strengthening the political ties between the US and Kurdistan.
The two senators arrived earlier Monday from Baghdad where they met senior Iraqi.
They called for increasing the number of US military trainers in Iraq from 3,500 to 10,000 and deploying a 100,000-strong ground force from Sunni countries of the region to boost the campaign against ISIL. (end) sbr.gb
