EU wants greater role within UN

BRUSSELS, Oct 13 (KUNA) -- The EU must do its utmost to increase its influence within the UN, the European Parliamentآ’s Foreign Affairs Committee said in a resolution on Tuesday.
A stronger EU role within a stronger UN would allow the Union to better achieve its foreign policy goals, it said, stressing that the UN bodies must bear more political weight and cooperate better.
The text also calls for a Europe-wide debate on the reform of the UN Security Council, within which the EU would have a seat. Meanwhile, the existing cooperation mechanisms aiming at making sure that EU member states sitting in the Security Council defend common EU positions must be improved, it noted.
The draft resolution, backed in the committee by 48 votes to 8, is set to be discussed and put to a vote of the whole House when it meets in November. (end) nk.mt
