NEW YORK Oct 9 (KUNA) -- UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon welcomed proposal of nominees for the Presidency Council of the Libyan Government of National Accord.
In a statement issued by his press office, Ban commended the dialogue participants on having reached a final text of a political agreement after "comprehensive and broad consultations." In Skhirat, Morocco, Ban's Special Representative Bernardino Leon told reporters that the Libyan parties have decided to go on and "we will continue working on the formation of this unity government, and hopefully tomorrow we will be able to propose this government." After months of turmoil and uncertainty, the UN chief urged Libyan leaders "not to squander this opportunity to put the country back on the path to building a state that reflects the spirit and ambitions of the 2011 revolution." Now is the time for the parties to the political dialogue to endorse this proposal and sign the agreement without delay, he said.
Ban remains committed to supporting the Libyan people through his Special Representative Bernardino Leon and the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).
Earlier this month, on the sidelines of the 70th session of the General Assembly, the First Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah met with Leon, and expressed Kuwait's keenness on measures to end violence in Libya.
During their encounter, Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled also touched on the latest situation in Libya and means to bring peace and security to the troubled nation. (end) mao.rk
