Obama apologizes to Doctors Without Borders, Ghani

WASHINGTON, Oct 7 (KUNA) -- In separate phone calls made Wednesday morning, US President Barack Obama spoke with Doctors Without Borders International President Dr. Joanne Liu and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani to apologize and offer condolences after a military airstrike mistakenly hit a hospital in Kunduz.
"The President assured that Department of Defense investigation currently underway will provide transparent thorough and objective accounting of the facts and circumstances of the instances. If necessary, the President would implement changes to make sure that incidents like this don't happen in the future," White House Spokesperson Josh Earnest told reporters.
Obama additionally commended the "bravery" of Afghan Security Forces and intends to work closely to provide security to Afghanistan.
On October 3, some 22 people at a Doctors Without Borders hospital in Kunduz, northern Afghanistan, were killed when the building came under air bombardment by US jetfighters for some 30 minutes. (end) ak.hb
