Tokyo stocks end 8-month low on concern over China slowdown

TOKYO, Sept 29 (KUNA) -- Tokyo stocks plunged Tuesday to hit an eight-month low amid concern over the Chinese economic slowdown after the release of China's weak industrial data.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) lost 714.27 points, or 4.05 percent, from Monday to 16,930.84, ending below the 17,000 threshold for the first time since Jan. 16.
The broader Tokyo Stock Price Index, which includes all shares on the market's First Section on the TSE, was also down 63.15 points, or 4.39 percent, to 1,375.52, with all 33 sectors on the TSE losing ground.
China's National Bureau of Statistics said Monday that profits of the country's major industrial companies plunged 8.8 percent on the year year in August, sharply down from 2.9 percent decline posted in July.
In the currency markets, at 4 p.m. (0700 GMT), the dollar fetched JPY 119.48-50 against JPY 119.88-98 in New York and JPY 120.27-28 in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Monday. (end) mk.tg
