WASHINGTON, July 6 (KUNA) -- The US-led coalition against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) launched a total of 20 airstrikes in Syria and Iraq on Sunday.
In a press statement, the Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR) said Monday that 19 airstrikes targeted ISIL, while one targeted the Khorasan Group "who are known to plot external attacks against the United States and our allies."
In Syria, bomber, fighter, and remotely piloted aircraft carried out eight airstrikes, as outlined in the statement: "Near Al Hasakah, where "five airstrikes struck four ISIL tactical units, destroying an ISIL tank, six ISIL vehicles, an ISIL building, an ISIL staging position and an ISIL fighting position.
"Near Ar-Raqqah, where one airstrike struck and destroyed an ISIL armored personnel carrier; Near Ain Al-Arab/Kobane, where two airstrikes struck an ISIL tactical unit, destroying four ISIL fighting positons and an ISIL mortar position," it stated.
It added that ninth airstrike was carried out near Aleppo, against what the US described as "veteran Al-Qaeda operatives" who form the Khorasan Group. That strike "struck a tactical unit and destroyed a vehicle."
Meanwhile in Iraq, attack, fighter, bomber, and remotely piloted aircraft carried out 11 airstrikes, as outlined in the statement: Near Bayji, where one airstrike struck and destroyed an ISIL excavator; Near Fallujah, where three airstrikes struck an ISIL large tactical unit, destroying an ISIL bunker; and Near Haditha, where one airstrike destroyed an ISIL technical vehicle.
"Near Kirkuk, where another airstrike struck an ISIL large tactical unit, destroying an ISIL heavy machine gun, an ISIL VBIED (vehicle-borne improvised explosive device), an ISIL cache and striking an ISIL heavy machine gun; Near Makhmur, where two airstrikes struck an ISIL tactical unit destroying an ISIL heavy machine gun, an ISIL fighting position and ISIL cache and striking an ISIL fighting position.
In Ramadi, one airstrike struck an ISIL tactical unit, destroying an ISIL excavator and an ISIL vehicle; and near Sinjar, the last two airstrikes "struck an ISIL large tactical unit, and (another) tactical unit, destroying an ISIL heavy machine gun and an ISIL building. (end)
