UN appoints Ould Cheikh Ahmad as Yemen Envoy

NEW YORK, April 25 (KUNA) -- UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon announced today the appointment of Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmad of Mauritania as his Special Envoy for Yemen.
The ex-Special Adviser to Ban on Yemen has expressed an interest in moving on to another assignment following the completion of Operation Decisive Storm.
The UN confirmed in a statement that Ould Cheikh Ahmad will work closely with the members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Governments in the region and other partners, as well as the United Nations Country Team for Yemen.
On his behalf, Ban expressed his "sincerest gratitude" to former envoy Jamal Benomar for his tireless efforts aimed at assisting the Yemeni people in realizing their aspirations for change through a peaceful transition.
Today, the UN appointed Peter Jan Graaff of the Netherlands as a successor to Ould Cheikh Ahmad as the Acting Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Mission for Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER).
Prior to the announcement of Ould Cheikh Ahmad, Ban said that he have been in consultation with UNSC and GCC representatives here about his proposed replacement of Benomar. (end) mao.bs
